M.J. KHAN’S INITIATIVES SAVES HOUSTON MILLIONS
Thursday, October 1, 2009 With the release of the August Monthly Financial and Operations Report, the City of Houston has seen a savings of approximately $10.3 million, due to the adopted budget amendments proposed by Councilman M.J. Khan earlier this year. The savings came from the projection of General Fund expenditures. Approximately $8.3 million was saved from city departments reengineering their processes which eliminated the need for vacant employment positions and/or backfilling projected attritions. There was also approximately $2 million in savings created in General Government through management initiative savings created from procurement reengineering. “Since being elected to City Council, I have worked tirelessly to streamline city spending. I am proud to see that in these tough economic times my initiatives are able to save tax payers dollars. I am grateful for all the work Mayor White and the administration have put forth to save the city money,” said Khan. The amendments offered and adopted during this year’s budget process requested for the continued development of process re-engineering improvements aimed at efficiency gains, using both in-house resources and, where necessary, outside consultants. As a candidate for City Controller, M.J. Khan has shown that he understands the financial issues which the city is facing and is prepared to lead the city with smart fiscal leadership. He has worked to guard tax payer dollars with the proposals for zero-based budgets, 5-year budget plans, process re-engineering and balanced scorecard systems for city departments. “This is a great example of how I plan to lead the city as Controller. By implementing my initiatives for process reengineering, we have seen that I can save the city money. Once elected, I plan to continue to direct the city in an efficient manner by holding the line on frivolous spending, increase transparency and conducting performance, process and financial audits of city departments,” stated Khan.
