Biography
M.J. Khan is a living example of the American Dream. He has earned two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering from the Universities of Sind and Karachi, Pakistan. He went on to earn two Masters Degrees; a Masters of Business Administration from Rice University, and a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. Currently, M.J. is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, the president of MAK Development, Inc., a real estate development company here in Houston.
M.J. Khan has worked tirelessly for the citizens of Houston’s District F as well as the rest of the city as their City Council Member. He has represented the district since winning the election in 2003 under the platform of: “Improving the Quality of Life One Houstonian at a Time!”, and that is exactly what he has done.
M.J. has a long record of community service. Throughout the years M.J. has been asked and continues serving on the Advisory Board of Directors for Asia Society Texas, Holocaust Museum Houston Board and as an Advisory Director for the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. He served as the President of the Pakistani - American Association of Greater Houston, Vice President of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, and a member of their Board of Directors. He has also served on the Small Business Advisory Board of the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission. Recently, M.J. has been appointed to the Transportation Infrastructure & Services Steering committee, as well as the International Council Advisory Group with the National League of Cities.
M.J. Khan has been honored by the City of Houston and other prestigious organizations for his leadership in the community. In 2008, M.J. received the Asian American Leadership Award from Asia Society Texas Center and the Leadership Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). In April of 2007, USCIS-U.S. Department of State honored M.J. with the Outstanding American by Choice Award in Washington, D.C. M.J. has also been honored to receive the President’s Appreciation Award from the Pakistani - American Association of Greater Houston (PAGH) in 1995; Torch Bearer Award from the Pakistan American Congress (PAC) in 2004; 2004 Father of the Year Award; 2004 Pride Award; Friends of Filipinos Award in 2004; Men of Style Award in 2004 and along with his wife, received a proclamation from the City of Houston in 2004 for their outstanding community service.
M.J. has been married for 34 years to Dr. Attiya Khan, a renowned Cardiologist in Houston and the first female cardiology fellow at the Texas Heart Institute. Together, he and his wife have one son, Faraz, husband to Mrs. Sarah Ashraf.
